How to spot a pest control emergency at the office

How to tell if you have a pest control emergency at the office

Just like homes, offices can be prone to pest infestations. However, they aren’t always as easy to spot. Many people pay less attention to their surroundings at work, as they are focused on other things. This can cause early warning signs of pest activity to go unnoticed. By letting bugs and other pests run around unchecked, you could be in for a pest control emergency. Watch out for these surefire signs that you have pests in your office.

Droppings or Urine Stains

Rodents tend to stay hidden, especially during the day. Because of this, you are unlikely to see them running around the office. However, they do come out at night to forage, and they can leave droppings and urine tracks behind them. While you may not notice a sporadic dropping here and there, it’s pretty hard to miss larger clusters. By the time the droppings have accumulated enough for you to notice, it is almost certain that the rodents have as well. They multiply rapidly and are quite difficult to get rid of, so this almost certainly qualifies as a pest control emergency.

Musty Smells

Many pests leave behind unpleasant odors, but you should be particularly wary if your office suddenly begins to smell musty. This could be a sign of a bed bug infestation. While you might think that bed bugs only infest homes and hotels, you’d be very wrong. These hardy little hitchhikers can travel on people’s clothes, briefcases, and other items, making their way to your office.

Your office may be especially at-risk if you see a lot of clients from out of town. They may be bringing bed bugs from their hotels to your workplace. Bed bugs definitely constitute a pest control emergency because their bites can be painful. Not only that, but they are incredibly hard to eradicate, so you’ll need to call in the professionals right away.

Increased Spider Activity

While a few spiders in and around your office are probably nothing to worry about, you should take notice if you start seeing more spiders than usual. Because spiders feed on other insects, a sudden increase in spiders could signal a pest control emergency. Spiders often increase in number when food is plentiful in the area. If you are seeing more of them hanging around, it is likely that there are other pests in your office as well. A pest control expert can identify any pest activity in your office so you can take care of it quickly.

Stop a Pest Control Emergency Before It Starts

The best way to prevent pest control emergencies in your office is to keep it as clean and tidy as possible. Most pests thrive in areas that are messy, as they provide more places to hide. If your office has a kitchenette or employee break room, make sure that it is cleaned daily. Do your best to get everyone to contribute to this effort to prevent a pest control emergency from taking over. Keeping the workplace clean and tidy at all times should be everyone’s responsibility, not just the janitor’s.
