There are other signs of termites too. Here are rainy season termite facts you need to know:

What You Might See

Often mistaken for flying ants, some species of termites are winged and will be most active when the weather is rainy or just after rains. Ants have more of a Marilyn Monroe type of waist compared to termites who have a straight waist. Termite have four equally sized wings and straight antennae compared to the single winged, bent antennae of flying ants.

Why Termites Swarm

Swarms occur when a termite colony is breaking into two (or more) colonies when the main colony reaches a certain size. Most often a swarm occurs after heavy rainfall or warm, humid temperatures. The colony has produced a winged male and female termite that are flying – swarming – in an effort to mate and reproduce.

Post-flight, the fertilized termites shed their wings and establish colonies of their own. Colonies can be a few miles wide, running below entire neighborhoods.

What to Do if You See a Termite Swarm

As you’re inspecting your yard and house after a rain storm, look for the following indicators of termite infestation:

  •  Sawdust-like residue, called frass, inside or outside the home near cracks. It often appears in piles of sawdust.
  • Mud tubes consist of frass and mud and look like a line of dirt. Termites create mud tubes to protect themselves from predators and outside elements while they work.
  • Hollow spots on exposed wood are an indicator that your home has a termite infestation. Apply light pressure to the area. If the wood breaks off easily, it’s an indicator of termites.

If you’ve seen any of these on or in your home or a swarm nearby, it’s time to call the professionals at Budget Brothers Termite and Pest Elimination.
