We’ve had a higher than average rainy season in Phoenix this winter and with the all that extra moisture come pests like termites who can’t help but make themselves known.
If you’ve seen what looks like flying ants, they could actually be swarming termites, an indicator of a larger infestation. And trust us, if you haven’t seen a termite swarm at your Phoenix home, it’s probably just a matter of time before you do.
There are other signs of termites too. Here are rainy season termite facts you need to know:
Often mistaken for flying ants, some species of termites are winged and will be most active when the weather is rainy or just after rains. Ants have more of a Marilyn Monroe type of waist compared to termites who have a straight waist. Termite have four equally sized wings and straight antennae compared to the single winged, bent antennae of flying ants.
Swarms occur when a termite colony is breaking into two (or more) colonies when the main colony reaches a certain size. Most often a swarm occurs after heavy rainfall or warm, humid temperatures. The colony has produced a winged male and female termite that are flying – swarming – in an effort to mate and reproduce.
Post-flight, the fertilized termites shed their wings and establish colonies of their own. Colonies can be a few miles wide, running below entire neighborhoods.
As you’re inspecting your yard and house after a rain storm, look for the following indicators of termite infestation:
