Scorpions

Arizona is notorious for scorpions. Scorpions can be found throughout the Phoenix metro area. They typically feed on crickets and other small insects. Scorpions have an average of 25 to 35 young that remain on the mother’s back for about three weeks. Bark scorpions are the most venomous scorpion in North America. Their sting can result in feelings of numbness to severe pain, usually lasting 24 to 72 hours. On rare occasions, it can cause vomiting and convulsions. We recommend seeking medical assistance if you have an extreme reaction.

In the video, we see a Desert Hairy Scorpion on the left, an adult Bark Scorpion in the middle and a baby Bark Scorpion on the right. A Desert Hairy can grow up to five and a half inches long, while an adult Bark Scorpion can grow up to three and a quarter inches long and a baby scorpion is less than one-eighth of an inch.

Where You’ll Find Scorpions

Scorpions are often found under large rocks, within wood piles, under tree bark, and within overgrown plants.

Scorpions often reside within the columns of block walls. The opening is just thick enough for them to slip into. Scorpions only need a crack or crevice to be about the thickness of a credit card in order to find shelter.

They can often gain access into a home because small gaps exist between the weep screed and stem wall found just below the stucco.

Scorpions are excellent climbers and can also take advantage of openings around soffit boards under eaves.

Openings in the stucco around plumbing lines and air conditioning lines are also natural entries into a home.

Gaps around doors are also an easy entry into a home for scorpions and other insects.
