What to Do When Roaches Keep Coming Back

August 9th, 2019

Dead cockroach on floor.

Cockroaches are common household pests that plague homeowners all across the country, including here in Arizona. While these little critters aren’t particularly dangerous, they can definitely be quite disgusting. Frequently, roaches keep coming back, despite your best efforts to keep them at bay. Read on to learn all about cockroaches and how to get rid of them once and for all.

Common Roaches in Arizona

Two types of roaches are common here in Arizona.

  • German Cockroaches – These are the ones you are most likely to see in your home. They are often called house or apartment roaches, thanks to their preference for being indoors. When the weather gets hot, they make their way inside to find food and water, which are both plentiful inside the homes and apartments of humans. Watch out for them in your kitchen and garage in particular, though you can find them just about anywhere in your home. They are light brown in color, with a pair of black bands just behind the head. In general, they grow to about half an inch to an inch in length.
  • Turkestan Roaches – Also called American roaches or sewer roaches, these are the much larger bugs that likely come to mind when you think about cockroaches. They love to hide out in damp, dirty areas, so you’ll often find them in planters, underground utility boxes, and around water features in your yard. If they get desperate for food and water, they can sneak indoors as well. These roaches are usually dark brown in color, sometimes with a hint of red, and they typically have yellow banding behind the head. They can grow to more than three inches in length, making them easy to spot on your property.

There are a few other types of roaches that occasionally make appearances in Arizona, but these two are the ones you are most likely to encounter.

Why You Need to Get Rid of Cockroaches

In general, cockroaches are not particularly dangerous to humans and pets. While they are capable of biting, it is relatively rare that they do, and their bites are not venomous or poisonous. However, because they typically live in dirty areas, they can carry bacteria on their bodies. They can then track this bacteria, as well as other contaminants, into your home. This bacteria can lead to symptoms similar to food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

As they leave droppings and broken shell fragments behind, this debris can also affect those who suffer from allergies. Those with compromised immune systems, including children and the elderly, often suffer the most significant impact, making it more critical than ever to protect these sensitive populations.
