Bed bugs. It’s said that you’ve either had them or are yet to have them. Why is that, though? Just a decade ago, the only place bed bugs lived seemed to be were in low-rent areas of New York City.
These days, however, bed bugs don’t discriminate based on location or wealth. One person is just as susceptible as the next, and you can really pickup them anywhere.
These are only five of the most common ways you bring bed bugs home.
The first place most people think of when they realize they have bed bugs is a hotel during a recent vacation. It’s become commonplace for motels and hotels of all types to be the breeding ground of these little hitchhikers.
They find their way into suitcases and clothes for a free ride back to your home, where they homestead and multiply.
We all love a good deal, and you might find that perfect skirt, nightstand, or footstool at the local Goodwill. Unfortunately, some of those items may have come from an infested home.
There are chances that they were even picked up in the retail store while waiting for you to take them home. Hello, awesome new furniture—and hello bed bugs!
We tend to think of hospitals as clean, safe places, but they are also public places. In fact, just this month, a new mom and her family found bed bugs in their hospital room in Mississippi.
The hospital attributed it to their inability to use the same chemicals now for pest control as they have in the past. Presumably, other medical facilities are facing the same situation.
They gym is just another public location that a variety of different people frequent. You’re putting your gym bag into a locker that other members have used.
It’s unlikely the locker rooms are checked regularly. Since they’re such great hitchhikers, they’ll find a new place to hide and be headed home with you.
Preschool is a common place where children from all different homes spend time together. This time is usually spent on carpet, nap cots, and playing dress up.
Just as lice transfer among children, bed bugs can do the same. The next thing you know, they’re in your child’s bed and then traveling through your home to your bed.
If you suspect you or a family member has brought them into your home, there are some surefire ways to check. They are most active at night, and can be found living along the seams of mattresses as well as in cracks and crevices of the bed frame.
You can also look for small blood stains on your sheets and pillowcases as evidence.
Most people don’t have any reaction to the bites, but some exhibit extreme sensitivities. Look for bites, redness, or itching on the face, neck, arms, and hands. This is a strong sign that you and your family need help.
