We might not get a freezing winter but the cooler temperatures keep pests at bay for a few months of the year.

Now that the weather is warming up, here’s who you can look for in your yard or home:

Carpenter Ants

At 3.4 to 13 mm long, carpenter ants are among the largest and arguably most destructive ants in the Phoenix area. While their name suggests they might eat wood, they actually just nest in moist, decaying, or hollow wood, including the wood of your home. If you’re seeing wood shaving piles, you might have a carpenter ant infestation.

Pavement Ants

These ants love to nest in the cracks of sidewalks and driveways, creating a mound of dirt as they burrow underground. They don’t stay near the pavement; typically they’re foraging for food. If that food is in your house, they will find the smallest cracks and enter your home. Their favorite meals are greasy but they aren’t picky and will eat anything humans eat. They’re known to bite so be careful if you see them.

Bees & Wasps

Bees and wasps tend to hibernate in the cooler months. Honeybees tend to stay in their hive to keep the queen bee warm and ready for laying eggs. Disturbing the hive can release hundreds of angered bees that are ready to sting. Same goes for wasps that may call cracks in your house or patio home for the winter.

If you notice bees or wasps on your property, it’s best to call Budget Brothers Termite and Pest Elimination for bee removal.

Spiders

While the weather is still tolerable, it’s a good time for spring cleaning but be careful. Left for a long time, items become home to pests like spiders especially if stored in a shed, garage, or attic. Making sure the area is well-lit, remove items carefully from storage and remain alert to any unwanted spiders that may be hiding in or under boxes.

It’s a great time of year to head outside but keep these pests in mind as you’re getting ready for the summer.
