Pet-Proofing Checklist for Pest Extermination

Pest extermination is a necessary part of property ownership, but if you aren’t properly prepared, it can jeopardize your pets’ health and safety. Learn ways to protect your pet with safe pest control.

Indoor Pest Extermination: 5 Ways To Pet-Proof Your Home

In the Phoenix area of Arizona, termite pest control isn’t “if;” it’s “when.” All property owners are faced with some type of pest extermination eventually, and it doesn’t have to be dangerous to your family pet.

You can take measures to protect your pets before, during, and after pest extermination.

1. Seek Licensed, Professional Pest Extermination

Professional exterminators care about your family safety, and that includes pets. Today, most insecticides have low-level toxins that are strong enough to rid your home of bothersome bugs but safe for humans and animals.

Unlicensed extermination companies can – and often do – use harsh chemicals.

2. Your Extermination Professional Should Be Trained/Experienced In Pet-Safety

Ask your extermination company if their technicians are trained to provide animal-safe pest extermination. Different solutions are needed for various types of bugs. Your exterminator should be able to tell you about the chemicals they will use that are effective but safe.

3. Plan To Remove Your Pets

Plan to remove your pets just before your professional pest extermination. It’s probably not necessary, but your exterminator will appreciate it.

Curious cats and dogs, no matter how friendly, can distract an exterminator during the process. You might want to keep them out of the house 2-3 hours following your extermination.

4. Remove All Feeding Bowls And Toys

Remove your pets’ feeding dishes and bag toys in plastic before pest extermination. Plan to keep them off the floor for 2-3 hours afterward. Place dry food in airtight containers.

5. Birds And Fish

Don’t forget your fowl and fish! Ask your pest extermination company what steps they recommend to protect fish and birds.

If you can remove the tank and birdcage, do so. If you can’t remove them, then you’ll have to forgo treatment in those rooms. Budget Brothers Termite & Pest Elimination will not treat any room in your home with birds or fish.

Pet-Proofing For Outdoor Pest Extermination

Again, follow your pest control company’s instructions before they provide lawn and garden pest extermination. Remove pets before the application and keep them safe until your lawn and plants are dry.

If your pest extermination professional uses a granular solution, you may need to keep your animals indoors for longer.

FYI…

The insect repellent formula you use is safe for humans but can cause neurological damage in animals. If bugs are driving your pet to distraction, you can use a bug spray, but read the label first to ensure it is pet-specific and safe.

Cats and dogs respond differently to extermination chemicals. For example, pyrethroid is a common pest control solution but can poison your cat.

Ultrasonic pest extermination is risky because dogs have ultra-sensitive hearing. Pests and rodents can get used to the sound, but your dog can suffer long-term damage.
